A Mike Norton brace in the space
of five second half minutes helped Curzon remain on the shirt
tails of league leaders Skelmersdale United, while moving
further away from those teams directly below them as all dropped
points.
The windy conditions were less than perfect for playing
football, but despite having to kick into it for the opening
half, Curzon still managed to create problems for the visitors,
who had former Middlesbrough player Dean Gordon at the heart of
their defence.
The game got off to the worse possible start for Newcastle, when
in the fourth minute their leading goalscorer, Lee Novak,
charged down a clearance by keeper David Carnell only to leave
him prostrate on the edge of the penalty area before being
stretchered off.
Wayne Gordon was the first to get a shot in on goal, but his
effort was weak and Carnell had no trouble in collecting the
ball and at the other end Eddie Stanford had a shot by Chris
Carr blocked, with captain Mark Birch cleared up at the second
attempt.
Newcastle should have done better on the quarter hour mark when
a wind-assisted throw in had the ball bouncing dangerously
inside the Curzon 6 yard box. Carnell, stretching over Scott
Bell to get to the ball, could do no better than palm the ball,
and Mark Sheeran, following up, had his shot cleared by David
Birch.
A through ball by Rhodri Giggs to Norton forced Craig
Summersgill to come quickly off his line and then a neat move by
the home side, moving the ball from left to right and back
again, ended with an Alex Mortimer cross being brought down on
the chest of Norton, but his shot went over the top.
A give-and-go move between Sheeran and Wayne Gordon looked to
have opened up the home side defence but the experience of Kevin
Parr showed through as he intercepted the pass before putting
his side back on the attack.
Curzon were caught napping just after a third of the game had
gone when a short corner by Leon Scott to Jamie McGlen enabled
the player to get an unchallenged cross into the box, which
Carnell was forced to tip wide for another kick.
In the second minute of stoppage time Wayne Gordon wasted the
best chance of the game so far after being played in by Bell.
With only Carnell to beat he somehow managed to drive his effort
well over the top.
The second period of the game had Curzon in almost total
domination and it looked as though it was going to be a
frustrating afternoon with chances going begging, but it was an
attempted cross field pass by David Birch that created the first
chance after an interception by David McTiernan and his pass
enabled Bell to try his luck from a difficult angle which
Carnell waved over the top.
Giggs and David Birch combined on the right with Birch getting
the ball onto the head of Norton who steered it wide of goal and
on 55 minutes Curzon should have taken what was by now a
deserved lead.
David Birch was fouled wide on the right. The kick was swung in
by Stanford and as Summersgill could do no more than parry the
ball it fell to the head of Nicky Allen inside the 6 yard box,
but with an open goal in front of him he put the ball over the
top.
A minute later and another Stanford free kick forced Neal Hook
to dive full length to turn the ball for a corner, from which
the ball went straight across the 6 yard area catching a
defender on the way and out for yet another corner, which Giggs
took and once again the ball went straight across the area but
this time out of play.
Bell made a move down the Curzon left and his cross, like those
at the opposite end of the pitch, also went across the face of
goal without a team mate getting a touch on the ball.
Giggs tried his luck on the turn which had Summersgill scurrying
across his goal line to make sure the ball went out of play and
we came close to the deadlock being broken on 66 minutes when a
free kick by Carnell, midway inside his own half, was met by the
head of Hook, leaving Summersgill beaten but the ball going just
wide of goal.
It was almost three times lucky for Curzon when on their third
successive corner it took a goal line clearance by Scott to get
the scores level, but on 73 minutes Curzon finally took a
justifiable lead.
From an Andy Watson free kick inside his own half, Norton took
possession, bringing the ball down on his chest, taking two
paces forward a driving the ball comfortably past the reach of
Summersgill.
The finger tips of Summersgill prevented Norton from adding a
second five minutes later after Dean Gordon failed to cut out a
Stanford cross as he turned the ball wide for yet another Curzon
corner.
With 12 minutes remaining Norton added the second of the day and
it was strike of quality as Norton turned as the ball came over
his shoulder, driving it over the outstretched arms of
Summersgill and into the net at the far side.
Giggs skipped past Dean Gordon only to be stopped by the diving
Summersgill and it was Gordon losing out again, this time to
Norton, that ended with an Allen shot going over the top, and in
the final minute of the game a double save by Summersgill,
pushing wide another fiercely driven free kick from Stanford and
then saving a Norton follow up that prevented a third for the
home side.
