Match Report

On a night when the top four in the UniBond Division One North clashed, this encounter was first (Curzon) versus third, neither team had lost a league game while the visitors had conceded only two goals from their previous seven games. At the end of the ninety minutes the impressive Bridge returned home with their goals against doubled and Curzon still three points clear at the top of the table and with an eight goal advantage over second placed Ossett Albion .
It was not an easy victory for the local side as Bridge clearly upped the pace in the second period but, despite their pressure, failed to either punish the home defence for the problems they created for themselves or to test goalkeeper David Carnell.
Douglas Pringle came close to opening his goal account on six minutes when a ball over the top had the recent signing in a chase on goal with visiting keeper Terry McCormick racing out of his area. Pringle was first to the ball, getting his head in to knock it over the advancing keeper but with Allen Fleming backing his keeper up, he managed to get a foot to the ball only a matter of a couple of yards off the line.
The opening goal on ten minutes was all about not giving up the battle for the ball as Mike Norton forced a hasty clearance from defender Tom Ince. His driven ball out of defence was met by the head of Rhodri Giggs near to the half way line, with the ball being directed back towards Norton. The Blues frontman collected the ball, came from right to left and unleashed a left foot shot that had McCormick clutching for the ball in vain as it flew into his net.
A confident move by the home side opened up the Bridge defence as Giggs slipped the ball to Nick Allen. His goal bound shot struck a defender which deflected for a corner.
It looked as though Ryan Salmon was going to put his side on level terms midway through the half when he collected the ball some 40 yards from goal and set off forward. With captain David Birch in pursuit the strength of Salmon kept him going forward and a last ditch tackle by the Curzon captain in the six yard area was enough to take the ball off his toes and knock it out for a corner.
Pringle got his foot to a Giggs corner after the ball went over the head of Allen, but at full stretch all he could do was turn the ball over the top and then a quick break out of defence by Bridge through Matt Mahoney came to nothing after setting up team mate Stephen Brown who's shot was weak and easily collected by Carnell.
McCormick reacted quickly to prevent Norton possibly adding a second when after the Curzon striker brought the ball under control, but on the edge of the area the keeper remained tall to get his body in the way of the shot and turn it away from goal.
The second period began with a constant procession of Bridge players pushing forward but it was Curzon who came closest to scoring when he beat his marker and McCormick, only to see his effort go the wrong side of the goal.
The hour mark  saw Curzon living dangerously as hesitation in defence created problems as they failed to clear the danger, leaving Alex Porter to drive the in while the head of the diving Salmon made contact with the ball to send in crashing against  the underside of the crossbar and then watched as it bounced down and away from goal.
With 14 minutes remaining of normal time Curzon gave themselves what proved to be a comfortable lead when substitute Josh Mitten brought the ball under control before chipping the ball to Allen. First bringing the ball down on his chest he struck the volley sweetly to see it go over the head of McCormick on the edge of his six yard area and into the back of the net.
