It took a run of 50 yards and a
strike of power and quality to send the points the way of the local
side in a game that was short on goal opportunities as both defences
cancelled out their opponents attacks.
The visitors had the best of the opening ten minutes of the game,
forcing Curzon onto the backfoot, but the first real goal mouth
action came at the visitors end after an exchange of passes between
Ryan Moore and Rhodri Giggs had the latter going into the 18 yard
area but a touch too many had the ball running out of play.
It was then the turn of Wakefield through Delroy Ferguson who beat
Jamie Kay down the right but his run into the box came to an end
when David Carnell smothered the ball at his feet.
The best chance of the game came on 30 minutes when Ferguson once
again proved the problem for Curzon, but his cross to the feet of
Chris Howarth had the frontman free 18 yards out, but his attempted
side-foot lob over Carnell failed to trouble the Curzon keeper and
sailed harmlessly over the top.
On the half-hour mark Curzon's latest recruit, Alex Mortimer, did
well to prevent Howarth making a move on goal, taking the ball off
his toes with a last ditch tackle 30 yards away from goal and
immediately at the other end Mike Norton had the chance to put his
side into the lead five minutes before the break but his header went
straight to the arms of Andy Woods.
The second period had Wakefield in the ascendancy early on, as
Carnell was forced to go down low to his left to collect a free kick
from Gary Shaw and on 55 minutes Norton got his head to a Kieran
Delaney cross only to see his ball back across the box strike a
defender and the ball go out for a corner.
The match winning move came from a link-up between substitute
Richard Tait and Giggs with the teenager getting the ball to his
team mate midway inside the Curzon half. Giggs made a run of some 50
yards before putting the ball into the Wakefield area which was only
cleared as far as another substitute, Elstrom Die, and his shot on
the run from 20 yards out flew into the visitors goal. |
