This was second from the
top versus second from the bottom, and it was the struggling
Chorley side who returned home with maximum.
Curzon started the game with loan signing Steve Foster
partnering Mike Norton up front with another player making a
debut, Jorge Diaz in midfield.
Curzon were the first to show in front of goal on seven
minutes when a Rhodri Giggs free kick was met by the head of
Norton only for it to go the wrong side of the upright, and
after winning the ball in midfield it was Norton and Giggs
again, with the latter getting a cross into the 18 yard area
only for it to be cleared by Kieran Fletcher.
The visitors took the lead on the quarter-hour mark, and
what a gift it was!
Nothing more than a boot down the middle from the Chorley
defence had Kevin Parr and David Carnell leaving the ball
for each other, and while they were deciding who was doing
what, Stephen Burke went in-between the two defenders,
taking the ball with him to score what will probably his
easiest goal of the season.
Diaz and Foster combined on 20 minutes to create an opening
but Foster's shot failed to trouble keeper Peter Collinge as
it went high and minutes later at the other end an attempted
clearance by Carnell was blocked by Burke, and with Chorley
keeping the pressure on the visiting defence a shot from
Mark Drew wasn't that far away from the target.
Foster came close to opening his account as Curzon moved the
ball down the left, as James Ogoo brought Diaz into the game
and his diagonal ball to the striker presented him with the
opportunity on goal.
Chorley doubled their lead a minute before the interval as
once again the home defence failed to clear their lines, and
as the loose ball fell to Danny Nolan, he drove the ball
into the top right hand corner of Carnell's goal.
The second period was very much a case of the visitors
looking to hold onto what they had when at times they had
ten men back inside their 18 yard area, while at the same
time looking to hit Curzon on the break, something which
they did on a number of occasions.
Foster crossed into the 18 yard area and as the ball drifted
goalwards, Collinge was forced to get back quickly onto his
line to tip the ball over the top for a corner, which came
to nothing, and then a Dave Birch cross was met by the head
of Foster which was comfortably taken by Collinge.
Curzon nearly became the authors of their own misfortune
once again on 65 minutes after Chris Curley easily lost
possession of the ball just inside his own half. Drew played
the ball forward to Burke and it was only a fine left handed
save by Carnell that prevented further embarrassment.
Two minutes later and it was almost a repeat of the opening
goal as the same three players took centre stage once again
when Parr attempted to head the ball back to Carnell. With
the ball falling short Burke took up the advantage but his
lob over Carnell bounced just wide of goal.
A ball in by Giggs skidded off the head of Norton to Diaz
and his attempted header ended up wide of goal but it was
Chorley quickly on the break again as Carnell had to have
two attempts to gain possession of a shot from Drew.
Another Giggs cross had Collinge under pressure from Norton
as the keeper was forced to get two fists to the ball and
then with sixteen minutes remaining the theatrics of a
Chorley defender ended the debut of Foster after the forward
made a gesture with his right hand and the defender dropped
to the ground as though shot by a sniper, to regain his
composure very quickly once he had seen referee Gordon
Johnson brandish the red card.
Curzon were thrown a lifeline on 79 minutes and once again
it was a defensive error that brought them right back into
the game when the ball was cleared only as far as substitute
Eddie Stanford 20 yards from goal and his shot was fumbled
by Collinge and ended up in the back of the net.
Collinge was put under pressure by Norton and Mark Redshaw
from a Giggs free kick with the keeper being forced to go
down to his right to turn the ball for a corner and then
Norton was the beneficiary of a Stanford cross as former
Stalybridge Celtic favourite Dave German failed to cut out
the cross. On a diagonal run Norton tried his luck with a
shot to the near post with Collinge spilling the ball as it
went out for a corner.
Diaz came close to snatching an equaliser for Curzon when he
hit a Birch cross with his first touch, but could only watch
as Collinge tipped it over the bar.
Curzon make the relative
short trip to the outskirts of Bury on Saturday to meet
bottom placed Radcliffe Borough, who gained their first
point of the season at the Tameside Stadium at the end of
August.
