Not for the first time
this season Curzon should have won by a comfortable margin,
but instead they were left with ten men in a nervy final
three minutes plus stoppage time to ensure that they came
away with maximum points.
Curzon did most of the attacking throughout the game with
the Dolly Blues looking to hit them quickly on the break and
it was the visitors who had the first effort on goal as Josh
Mitten tried his luck but his effort was weak and easily
collected by Mark Thornley.
An attempted clearance by Alex Mortimer at the other end of
the match struck Neil Uberschar with the rebound falling
kindly to the feet of Neil Marshall, but his shot was
wayward and flew well over the top.
A City corner was quickly cleared to the opposite end by
keeper David Carnell, and a head-on by Mitten had Dougie
Pringle racing onto the ball only to be out numbered by Iain
Swan and keeper Mark Thornley.
The deadlock was broken on the 26th minute as Curzon moved
the ball from right to left, before being rolled into the
path of Mortimer. His cross to the far post was met with a
majestic leap by Rhodri Giggs who steered his header over
Thornley, leaving the ball nestling in the far corner of the
net to give the visitors a deserved lead.
Three minutes later and it was nearly two as Carnell once
again set up an attack after collecting the ball from a City
corner kick. With the ball finding it's way to Chris Worsley
on the left, his cross found Pringle, like Giggs earlier at
the far post, but the forward looked to have been caught in
two minds and his header back inside the 6 yard area was
easily taken by Thornley.
The lead was finally doubled on 36 minutes when a Giggs
corner had both home and visiting players trying to get a
touch on the lose ball, before Mitten drove home through a
crowded area from 14 yards out.
The second period was reminiscent of the first as Chris
Curley played a diagonal ball inside to Mitten. The forward
got his head to the ball only to see it strike Guy Heffernan
and deflected safely into the hands of his keeper.
Giggs watched as a header went wide of target, Nick Allen
had a chance to make the game safe but found Thornley coming
quickly off his line to smoother his shot, and Pringle,
racing towards goal, got his head to the ball before the
advancing Thornley, but his effort bounced the wrong side of
the upright just after the hour mark.
Curzon were reduced to ten men on 82 minutes after they lost
possession of the bal just inside the home half and the
ball was quickly knocked forward to Marshall. Dave Birch's
last ditch tackle failed to get a foot on the ball, and as
the last defender he left referee David Holloway with no
option other than to wave a red card in his direction.
Despite being down to ten men it was still the visitors
doing the attacking and once more it was Pringle getting his
foot to a cross but knocking it just over the top.
With three minutes of the 90 remaining City gave themselves
a lifeline when, after the referee awarded them a dubious
free kick in a central position and 20 yards from goal,
Marshall drove the ball low and past the defensive wall to
beat the stranded Carnell.
