After saying goodbye to 2007 with two
consecutive home defeats, the first home game of 2008 had Curzon at
times played some exquisite football as they rammed in five goals in the
space of 25 first half minutes, which made the second period no more than a
formality.
Managerless Bridlington Town, who won their first match under the
temporary stewardship of chairman Peter Smurthwaite 4-0, showed a
determined spirit in the opening period of the game, but it was the home
side who looked the likelier side to score as chance after chance came their
way.
Neil Garyston got his foot to a cross from Nick Allen as Mike Norton was
ready to pounce on nine minutes, and two minutes later it was Norton heading
wide from an Eddie Stanford cross, and then a four man move, involving
Rhodri Giggs, Stanford, Alex Mortimer and Norton fell on stoney ground as
Chris Curley drove the ball high and wide of goal.
Kevin Parr presented Town with a chance on goal when his attempted headed
clearance fell to Dean Lackie, but his effort went straight into the hands
of David Carnell.
The game began to turn the way of the home team on 20 minutes as Norton
scored the first of his hat-trick when he got on the end of a Rhodri Giggs
corner to open the scoring.
In a matter of no more than 60 seconds the visitors went from being in a
position to draw level to being two down, when Wayne Wallace was found
unmarked at the far post after Phil Harrison drove a ball in from the left.
The striker steadied himself, drove the ball across Carnell, only to strike
the inside of the upright. With the ball coming straight back to him he was
quickly outnumbered with the ball being quickly moved down to the other
end of the ground.
Norton gained possession inside the 18 yard area following a pass from
Giggs, went round keeper Mick Clarke only to be brought tumbling to the
ground by the same player, leaving referee James Madine awarding a penalty.
Norton took the kick himself, driving the ball home for his second of the
game on 28 minutes.
With their pass and move football Curzon at times had their opponents
chasing shadows and it was no surprise when they went further into the lead
as midfielder Chris Ball got his name on the score sheet on 37 minutes,
heading home a Chris Curley cross from inside the 6 yard area.
With thee minutes to go before the break it was the turn of Curley, rounding
off a sublime Curzon move, as he beat the attempted offside trap to slide
the ball past the advancing Clarke, and a minute later Giggs joined the ever
growing list of scorers.
Having been awarded a free kick inside their own half the ball was played
high into the Town 18 yard area. Norton rose highest, flicking the ball to
Giggs, who controlled the ball before unleashing a shot which left Clarke no
more than a spectator as the ball flew into his net.
Despite their obvious defeat, Town began the second period as determined as
they began the first, as they set about looking for at least a consolation
goal, but it was Curzon who stretched their lead a minute after the hour
mark, and once again it came from the 12 yard spot.
A corner on the left was played back to Mortimer by Giggs. As the defender
made a run into the penalty area Alex Rhodes brought the run to an abrupt
halt, and once more referee Mr Madine had no hesitation in awarding a spot
kick, which Norton despatched into the back of the net, a goal which then
saw the clubs leading goalscorer depart for the changing rooms in favour of
Josh Mitten.
The game remained open, and it took a good right hand from Carnell to deny
the visitors a consolation goal when Harrison cut in from the left. His shot
was destined for the top left hand corner but Carnell reached high to turn
it onto the cross bar, and at the other end substitute Danny Whelan, a
midweek signing, was only on the field of play for two minutes but almost
added his name to the list of scorers, but he could only watch as his effort
bounced agonisingly wide of goal.
Curzon make the trip to Yorkshire at the weekend when they travel to play
third placed Bradford Park Avenue, who are five points behind the Tameside
outfit but have two games in hand.
When the two team's met at the Tameside Stadium in mid-November a goal in
the final minute of the game ensured that maximum points went home with the
visitors.
