The cheers
from the home supporters at the end of the game demonstrated just how much this
draw meant to them, but with a little more luck the three points should have
been on their way back to Tameside.
This wasn't the best of games. A windy day, an uneven surface that slopes from
wing to wing and officials who, on a number of occasions, couldn't agree on
which way to award corners or throw-ins, to say nothing of decisions that at
times incensed the travelling Curzon support, certainly didn't help.
The first half was more or less a non-entity, but it was no surprise that it was
Curzon who had the first opportunity on goal in the 24th minute as they kicked
into the wind when Mike Norton knocked in a ball to the far post. Eddie Stanford
tried but he was outnumbered by defenders before he could get a clean shot in on
goal.
If the first half was one lacking chances, the second was in stark contrast, as
the visitors pushed forward while their hosts defended in depth and looked to
score on the break.
A shot from James Ogoo was blocked by Dan Thirkell and with Alex Mortimer trying
to get onto the loose ball keeper Tom Morgan was quickly off his line to gain
possession.
On the hour mark Stanford had a run down the right and his bal into the box was
cleared by the head of Rob Morgan with Norton waiting to pounce and shortly
after manager Gary Lowe sowed his intent when he brought off teenage defender
Ben Richardson in favour of Jorge Gazapo to make him the third striker, and it
wasn't long before the substitute got into action when his shot, from 20 yards
out, flew just past the right-hand post of Morgan's goal, striking the stanchion
at the back.
A Gazapo shot was blocked, Norton drove the rebound at goal which was also
inches wide of the home net as Curzon were giving everything in an effort to get
that first elusive goal, but there attacking intent almost cost them dearly as
Harrogate broke out of defence through Scott Ryan. His cross to the far side was
met by Ryan Haigh and with his shot on target, Mortimer threw himself in the way
of the ball to turn it for a corner.
An overhead kick by Norton went just wide and then one all mighty scramble in
the Harrogate 6 yard box, as Gazapo tried to turn with the ball, with both
defenders and forwards falling down, was eventually cleared, but in stoppage
time it was the Yorkshire outfit who nearly nicked the points, but they were
thwarted by a double save from Carnell.
Saturday sees Curzon sign-off their 2007/08 home league campaign when they
entertain Clitheroe who won the reverse fixture 2-1 at the beginning of March,
and who will no doubt be buoyed by the fact that they've won six of their last
ten outings, sharing the points on two other occasions.
