It was always anticipated that
this top of the table UniBond North fixture was always going to
be a tight affair and so it proved, with Curzon's 13 match
unbeaten league run coming to an end three minutes before the
end of normal time, and to compound matters the local outfit
ended the game with ten men for the second successive game.
Bradford were the first to show on five minutes after Alex
Mortimer was adjudged to have fouled Chris Gahgan and the ball
into the box had Lincoln Adams and Paul Gedman both going for
the ball but keeper David Carnell did well to gain possession.
Three minutes later and Chris Worsley tried a shot from 30 yards
which had Jon Worsnop reaching high to collect and with the
action being quickly moved to the other end a Dave Birch
clearance went to the feet of Steven Connors and his strike on
goal was comfortably taken by Carnell.
The visitors thought they had taken the lead on 36 minutes when
from an in-swinging corner they had the ball in the back of the
net but it was disallowed as a result of a foul on Carnell.
Adams had an effort cleared off the line by Mortimer five
minutes before the interval from which Curzon went straight down
the other end through Mike Norton but the Blues frontman was
outnumbered and lost possession on the edge of the 18 yard area.
A chance went begging for Curzon in first-half stoppage time as
a Rhodri Giggs corner was met by the head of the incoming Adam
Jones but the ball went well wide of goal.
It was the home side who had the best of the opening second
period but their backs were put to the wall on 68 minutes when
Chris Curley received his second yellow card of the game and
with it the initiative was handed to the visitors but they came
close to breaking the deadlock on 79 minutes after they broke
out of defence through Norton. With Nick Allen and Worsley up in
support he chipped the ball to the far post but the head of but
Darren Hockenhull got his head to the ball before Worsley to
turn it for a corner.
The decisive strike came on 87 minutes when from a through deep
on their left hand side, Curzon lost possession. The ball was
played into the box and from a scramble inside the 6 yard area
substitute Tom Barker was able to bundle the ball over the line.
