Injury plagued Curzon Ashton
headed off to the east coast and returned as league leaders
after this well earned victory.
It was the home side who had the first shot on target, coming in
the fifth minute from the boot of Tom Greaves after he cut in
from the right across the 18 yard line, but his effort failed to
trouble visiting keeper David Carnell, and it was Greaves again
minutes later, this time seeing his shot blocked by Paul Riley.
Curzon should have gone ahead inside the quarter-hour mark, and
Town reduced to ten men, after Rhodri Giggs was put through with
a ball over the back line.
As Giggs headed for goal, and with keeper Chris Hill out of his
area, he clearly made contact with the Curzon player on the
thigh, knocking him off his stride, but all credit to Giggs, who
still managed to get a shot in on goal only to see it cleared
off the line by Paul Stoneman. Despite the obvious foul referee
Mr Smith didn't see fit to even speak to Hill.
It was Stoneman to the rescue of his team again on 18 minutes
after Mike Norton beat the offside trap and from a narrow angle,
and with Hill nowhere to be seen, his goal bound cross was
headed clear by the defender two yards off the line, but two
minutes later the visitors finally, and deservedly, took the
lead.
With Town trying to play the offside trap once again, Norton
held his run before a pass from Chris Curley left the defence
exposed, and with Hill on his 6 yard line, Norton drove the ball
to the keepers left with this shot going in off the inside of
the post.
The scores came close to being level three minutes later as
Carnell was forced to save with his feet from Naylor, leaving
David Birch to complete the clearance as he drove the ball to
safety.
With Curzon constantly pushing forward the home side became
reliant upon breaks out of defence and on what was becoming a
rare attack Stoneman left his defensive duties to have a double
pop at goal, only for the impressive Carnell to deny him after
Birch had charged down his first effort.
The lead was doubled five minutes before the interval when Nick
Allen gave chase to a ball down the left. With substitute Craig
Rouse unable to keep up with the midfielder, his cross into the
box was met by the head of Norton who steered the ball past the
flat-footed Hill and into the net.
It was very nearly three moments before the break and it was
Allen once again being the provider, this time to Josh Mitten,
but his shot across the body of Hill struck a defender and went
out for a corner on the right.
Norton was denied a hat-trick on 51 minutes by a flag happy
official as he lifted the ball over the head of the advancing
Hill and into the net.
Despite the continuing domination of the visitors, Town
continued to present occasional problems and it took a full
length dive from Carnell to prevent Gareth Naylor from having
his name on the score sheet just after the hour mark.
The result was put beyond any doubt on 65 minutes as Curzon
mounted another attack, only to be brought to a sudden halt by
the hand of Carl Giblin on the edge of the 'd', yet another
incident which the referee elected to take no action over.
However, this time Town didn't escape punishment, as Giggs took
the free kick quickly, curling the ball over the ruck of players
assembling in the 18 yard area, leaving it to nestle in the
right hand of the home goal.
Curzon will be looking to cement their position at the top of
the table when they entertain fourth placed Garforth Town on
Saturday. The Yorkshire side are just two points behind the
Blues having played the same number of games.
The local outfit hope that the injured quartet of Andy Watson,
Adam Jones, Chris Worsley and James Ogoo, who hasn't kicked a
ball in a competitive match this season, will soon be available
for selection.
The game at the Tameside Stadium kicks-off at 3pm.
