Curzon made the most of the number of
postponements in the UniBond League Division One North to stretch their lead
at the top of the table to seven points while completing the treble over
neighbours Mossley in this local derby.
With the pitch requiring no more than a nod from match referee Ian Siddall
to confirm that the game would go ahead, Curzon couldn't have had a better
start when in the third minute, after an exchange of passes between James
Ogoo and Dougie Pringle, the latter played the ball to strike partner Mike
Norton. The Blues leading goalscorer moved across the box, wrapped his
right boot around the ball and drove it low to the left of keeper Ashley
Connor, leaving the keeper well beaten as the ball nestled in the back of
the net.
Norton went close six minutes later with a scissors kick following a cross
by Rhodri Giggs and at the other end Kevin Parr had to be alert to intercept
a ball into the 18 yard area, taking it off the toes of Gareth Hamlet to
knock it out for a corner.
Pringle should have doubled his sides lead on 27 minutes when an inch
perfect cross by Giggs was met by the front man, 6 yards from goal and
unmarked, but he failed to test the keeper, knocking his header wide.
Come the half-hour mark Curzon inexplicably began to lose their way and it
was no surprise when Lee Connor put Mossley back on level terms. A corner on
the right on 36 minutes had the big defender racing into the area to get his
head to the ball to send it thundering past David Carnell.
It only took the visitors three minutes to turn the screw even further and
leave the league leaders in shock, and once more it was a header that proved
their undoing, this time substitute Jamie Miller doing the damage.
Manager Gary Lowe must have been happy to hear the whistle for the half-time
break and while cup may not have bounced off every wall in the dressing
room, his side came out for the second period and began to dominate the
game, but had it not been for the reactions of Carnell on 51 minutes, when
he saved a point blank header from Paul Quinn, the end result could have
looked much different.
The scores were all square on 58 minutes after Norton won an aerial battle
with Lee Connor to send Pringle in on goal, and after going beyond his
marker he drove the ball comfortably past Ashley Connor.
A Pringle shot on 70 minutes had Ashley Connor diving full length to turn
the ball wide and three minutes later he made a double save, first from
Rhodri Giggs and then Pringle, with Giggs eventually driving the loose ball
home only to have it ruled out for offside.
With 14 minutes left to play Curzon regained the lead when Chris Curley made
a run to the near post to get his head to a Giggs free kick from the right,
but on 80 minutes Curzon were reduced to ten men after Giggs was shown a red
card following an off the ball incident.
With Mossley looking to make the extra man advantage pay, Curzon quickly
turned defence into attack seven minutes from the end of normal time to wrap
up the points when the ball fell to the impressive James Ogoo. With Norton
the only play near to the Mossley half, Ogoo played a 40 yard diagonal pass
that split the Lilywhites defence wide open. Norton's pace soon had him
bearing down on the visitors goal and as Ashley Connor came off his line he
moved round the keeper before rolling the ball into an empty net for his
second of the day.
Saturday sees Curzon make the relatively short journey to Clitheroe who
currently occupy 15th place, having taken 18 points from 15 games, and on
Boxing Day they will be looking to complete the treble over Ossett Albion
when they entertain the Yorkshire at the Tameside Stadium. KO is 3pm.
