After three away games Curzon,
boosted by the return from injury of goalkeeper David
Carnell, returned home, and with a much improved team
performance deservedly took maximum points from their Yorkshire
opponents.
It was the visitors who had the better of the opening
quarter-hour and it was nearly an lucky thirteen minutes for
Curzon after Harrogate were awarded a free kick 20 yards from
goal. With the ball played quickly to Ben Jones the player was
through and put the ball beyond Carnell only to have his effort
ruled offside.
James Ogoo set up an attack for the home side after a break down
the right and a pass inside to Rhodri Giggs. With Matt Morgan
taking the ball off the toes of the Curzon player the ball found
its way back to Ogoo and his cross into the box was met by the
head of the inrushing Giggs but the ball was comfortably taken
by Jacob Giles.
Giles was into more serious action on 25 minutes after Jorge
Gazapo brought the ball under control after a cross from the
right. Turning his marker he unleashed a shot on goal which had
Giles going quickly to his right to turn the ball for a corner.
Two minutes later and another opportunity for Curzon to test
Giles when a Giggs free kick was met by Chris Curley but his
effort went over the top.
Morgan tried his luck with a long range effort on the half-hour
which had Carnell moving across his six yard box to collect and
then the keeper set Nick Allen free down the right. His ball on
to Giggs was whipped perilously close to goal forcing Garry
Tyson to concede another corner.
Giles once again stood between Curzon and their much sought
after opening goal on 37 minutes when Gazapo was fouled on the
left 20 yards from goal. Giggs took charge of the kick, curled
the ball right footed around the wall and with the ball looking
destined to end up in the back of the net, Giles at full stretch
got a hand to the ball to turn it wide of his goal.
The only goal of the game came six minutes into the start of the
second period and it began with the tenacity of Allen, winning
the ball on the right, ending with the ball being despatched by
the head of Chris Worsley from a Giggs, and this time Giles was
well and truly beaten.
On the hour mark Gazapo got his head to cross which Giles
collected on the goal line, and two minutes later Giggs should
have given his side a two goal cushion when he was put through
the middle after beating the offside trap. With defenders in
pursuit and Giles coming off his line he could do no better than
to chip the ball into the hands of the keeper.
A minute later and the spurned opportunity could have proved
costly as Harrogate went down the other end, and with the home
defence failing to clear their lines, a shot on the turn by
Jones forced Carnell to get low down to his right to save.
The result should have been beyond any doubt in the first minute
of stoppage time when Gazapo was clean through on goal from a
pass by James Ogoo. With defenders trying to make up lost
ground, and with Giles coming off his line, the forward tried to
take the ball round the advancing keeper but knocked it too far
and ran the ball out of play.
Curzon go back on the road on Friday with a trip to the north
east to face Newcastle Blue Star and on Monday they entertain
Lancaster City (KO 3pm) at the Tameside Stadium
