With six changes from the
line-up that started the game at the weekend, including four
teenagers, Curzon earned their right to enter the second round
of the competition and with it an away fixture at UniBond South
side Alsager Town.
The opening 15 minutes was a game of both sides testing out the
other, leaving both goalkeepers at this stage to have a fairly
relaxed evening, with the first shot on goal coming in the 22nd
minute when form a free kick Ryan Stewart drove the ball
straight into the hands of David Carnell from 20 yards out.
Elstrom Die and Jamie Byrne combined down the left with Byrne
getting a snap shot in, forcing Liam Higginbotham to snatch the
ball low down near his right hand post and then just before the
half-hour mark it was Byrne again, this time getting on to a
knock-on by Josh Mitten, but his shot lacked power and was
comfortably taken by the home keeper.
Woodley took the lead on 31 minutes and it was courtesy of an
own goal by 18-year-old Ben Richardson who appeared to get
caught in two minds as the ball was driven in from the right and
all he could do was to steer the ball with his head past
Carnell.
Three minutes before the break Curzon got back on level terms as
Die played a short corner back to Jamie Kay. His teasing curling
cross to the far post was met by the head of the incoming Byrne
who headed home his first senior goal of the season.
The second period began with Dave Hanlon testing Carnell when
his cross-come-shot had to be parried away and Richardson was
left to complete the clearance, turning the ball out of play.
It was the Curzon teenagers showing the way to goal after Byrne
played the ball square across the pitch to Richard Tait, and his
shot from 25 yards out had the beating of Higginbotham, only to
go out of play via the top of the crossbar.
The visitors went into the lead on 64 minutes with a goal worthy
of winning any cup game and the damage was once again done by
Byrne, who picked the ball up in the left hand channel, and on
the turn drove it over the head of Higginbotham and into the far
corner of the net.
The remaining period was one of Curzon almost constantly on the
attack with Woodley reliant on trying to break quickly out of
defence, with Ryan Moore forcing a save from Higginbotham and it
was only the width of the home sides left hand post that
prevented Moore from increasing his sides lead when his shot
left Higginbotham floundering, only to strike the outside of the
post.
With a minute remaining of normal time Mike Norton turned Andy
Russell one way then the other, before unleashing a shot to the
near post which Higginbotham did well to get a strong hand to it
to turn it for yet another Curzon corner.
After the final whistle was blown referee Mr Bristow brandished
a red card, apparently in the direction of Woodley's Mario
Sergio-Daniel after he struck Paul Riley.
