This should have been a
far more comfortable win for the Tameside outfit but instead
a jittery final 15 minutes had to be endured as Chorley did
what they could to try and earn a replay.
It is fair to say that Curzon dominated the game for most of
the 90 minutes but it was the home side who had the first
attempt on goal, all be it one that went well wide, with an
effort from Danny Nolan, but is also fair to say that Peter
Collinge between the home sticks was troubled very little in
the opening 15 minutes but he had to be alert shortly after
to get his foot to the ball when Mike Norton latched onto a
pass from Chris Curley.
With the pressure being maintained on the home goal, it was
the dual of Collinge and Norton again, this time the keeper
getting his fingertips to a drive to turn the ball over the
top for a corner.
Chorley were quick to clear the danger from the corner as
they moved down the left through Neil Smith and his cross
into the 18 yard area was well dealt with by Dave Birch.
A chance went begging on 21 minutes when Dougie Pringle put
a ball to the feet of Norton inside the area, but as the
frontman tried to get the ball from under his feet defenders
had recovered their ground to take the ball off his toes.
Three minutes later and the visitors should have taken the
lead when Pringle was brought down inside the area and
referee Mr Johnson had no hesitation in awarding a penalty.
It was Pringle who placed the ball on the 12 yard spot and
although Collinge went the wrong way Pringle also sent the
ball the wrong side of the upright and the scores remained
level.
The deadlock was finally broken two minutes before the
half-hour mark when Norton on the edge of the area drove a
thunderous volley past the well beaten Collinge and into the
roof of the net following a forward pass by Chris Curley.
On 62 minutes Norton had the perfect opportunity to score
his second goal of the day and double his sides lead when,
after beating the offside trap, he attacked the home goal,
delayed his shot, went round Collinge, went for another
touch, and when he finally got his shot in on goal, James
Mullineux was back on the goal line to clear the ball for a
corner.
The kick was driven in by Rhodri Giggs and with the Chorley
defence unable to deal with the ball, Norton this time made
sure he wouldn't be denied again, as he turned and drove the
ball home from 8 yards.
A Giggs free kick from the left had Curley meeting the ball
at the near post and his touch was true but Collinge had
read the run and too the ball comfortably.
Chorley were not going to give in and a run down the right
by Mike Eckersley ended with a cross which the robust Smith
got his foot to the ball but Steve Intihar was well placed
to collect the ball.
Nolan then tried to beat Intihar with a similar effort, but
once more it was the positioning of Intihar that denied him
on 73 minutes and two minutes later it was the same player,
this time beating Dave Birch, with a shot across the body of
Intihar but also wide of goal.
With six minutes remaining Chorley gave themselves a
lifeline when they opened Curzon up down the right through
substitute Phil Cooney and his cross 10 yards from goal was
met by another substitute, Stephen Burke, who gave Intihar
no chance.
A Curzon free kick on 85 minutes was wasted by the visitors
enabling the home side to counter attack but this time the
ball whipped-in wasn't met by the boot of a forward and was
cleared.
After six consecutive games away from home, Curzon return
home on Saturday when they entertain Woodley Sports in a
UniBond North League fixture (KO 3.00) and they are back in
cup action 72 hours later when they play Stocksbridge Park
Steels (KO 7.45pm) also at the Tameside Stadium.
The Sheffield based outfit are the only side to beat Curzon
in a competitive game this season when they knocked them out
of the FA Cup on the first Saturday in September.
