Curzon
completed a home double over the Yorkshire side, but after an
opening 45 minutes when they had control of the game they almost
conspired to throw away the three points in the second period.
The local side should have taken the lead on 16 minutes after a
Rhodri Giggs cross from the right was first of all missed by
Mike Norton and as it ran through to Jorge Diez, and from 6
yards out, he somehow managed to lift the ball over the top and
then a cross by Alex Mortimer was met by the head of Norton but
his effort was comfortably taken by Karl Spratt.
The visitors had there own chance to take the lead on 23
minutes when a ball driven diagonally across the 18 yard area by
Karl Simpkins went to Chris Kamara, but David Carnell bravely
threw his body at the ball to turn it for a corner.
Curzon's attacking play finally paid off on 37 minutes after
Graforth couldn't clear their lines from a corner on the left.
Mortimer played a reverse pass to the overlapping Andy Watson
and his ball into the box was met the head of the incoming
Norton who steered it beyond Spratt, and five minutes later the
lead was doubled, as Curzon turned defence into attack.
Awarded a free kick midway inside the Curzon half Brett Renshaw played
the ball forward and Carnell went head first and low down to
gain possession. With the ball quickly played down field it was
suddenly advantage Curzon as the ball went to Diez. Going past
his marker he then went round keeper Spratt before driving the
ball into the net for his first goal of the season.
After the excitement of the opening 45 minutes the second period
really was the complete opposite. A scrappy affair in which
neither team demonstrated the same sort of technique as in the
opening period, with passes going astray and chances created
through errors at either end.
A misplaced placed header by Dave Birch went to Renshaw who gave
Luts De Melo an opportunity to level the score but his shot was
wayward but on 56 minutes Graforth got themselves right back
into the game.
Awarded a free kick, just outside and to the right of the 18
yard area, Greg Kelly curled the ball round the defensive wall
to leave Carnell rooted to the spot and the ball tucked in the
back of his net.
Just after the hour mark Diez had a run down the left and his
ball to Norton was driven at goal only to strike a defender with
the ball looping into the hands of Spratt.
The match referee, Richard Bartlett, and one of his assistants
brought about an opportunity for Garforth as the assistant
awarded a throw to the home side which the referee gave the
opposite way. Not surprisingly the visitors didn't ask for
another opinion, quickly taking the throw and catching the home
defence off guard, and a block by Kevin Parr 6 yards out from
Renshaw prevented what would have been a somewhat controversial
incident.
The two goal lead should have been restored on 79 minutes when
Diez fed the ball to Giggs. With space and time, and only Spratt
to beat, the Curzon played dragged his effort wide of goal.
From the goal kick the ball was played down the opposite end of
the pitch. The ball was left for Carnell to clear, his clearance
went only as far as Simpkins, Watson managed to get a block on
the shot and the rebound was played towards goal but Carnell had
managed to recover his ground to collect the shot.
There was another let-off for Curzon as Watson and Chris Curley
got in each others way and better finishing by Chris Kamara
could have proved costly, but his shot went straight to Carnell.
In the final seconds of the 90 minutes only the fingertips of
Spratt and his left hand upright prevented Birch from giving his
side a two goal cushion when his left foot shot had the keeper
going full length to save.
Curzon Ashton entertain Newcastle Blue Star (KO 3.00) who
currently occupy a mid-table position.
When the two team's met in the reverse fixture in August it
ended goalless, but the fortunes of the north east outfit took a
turn for the better after their appointment of former Northern
Ireland international Tommy Cassidy as manager.
