If good fortune and the will to
dig deep are prerequisites for winning honours, then both were
in abundance for the visitors as they came away from College
Grove with maximum points in a night that proved to be a
difficult one in more ways than one.
With the kick-off delayed for 30 minutes due to a number of the
home side having difficulty reaching the ground due to traffic
problems, it was Curzon who began the game kicking down the
slope and with the wind at their backs, but it was Wakefield who
had the vast majority of the attacking play.
It would have been no surprise had Wakefield taken a three nil
lead, at least, with good chances being spurned by Adam Jones,
Graham Marchant and Chris Hutchings. Having said that, it was
not all down to the wasteful Wakefield forwards, as David
Carnell stood strong throughout in the Curzon goal, making many
a good save to thwart the opposition, while those about him were
toiling.
Wakefield thought they had taken the lead when after being
awarded a free kick inside their own half the ball was quickly
played into the opposing half where Marchant was able to beat
Carnell with an effort from the left hand side of the goal. With
the home players and supporters jubilant the assistant referee
stood with his flag raised and after a brief conversation with
referee Mr Greenwood, the goal was ruled out as the ball was
moving when the free kick was taken.
Andy Woods had only one effort to test him, and that was in the
second minute of first half stoppage time, but it proved to be
the one goal that separated the team's.
Jorge Diaz, inside the 18 yard area, beat his marker only to get
a rap on the ankles for his troubles. Trying to maintain his
balance, a second tackle had him falling to the floor, and
referee Mr Greenwood blowing his whistle and pointing to the
spot. Mike Norton took charge of the kick and drove the ball
beyond Woods.
The second period brought about a rejuvenated Curzon as they
defended in depth, broke out of defence quickly, although it was
once again the home side who looked the more likely to pull the
goal back, but the visitors held out, and headed back home
and into further traffic delays, but more than satisfied with
the three points.
