After their 9-0 drubbing seven
days ago a reaction from the Stags was to be expected and the
visitors were certainly made to work, and sweat, for their three
points which enabled them to go into October as the leaders of
the UniBond North Division One.
It was the visitors who made the early running, with Mike Norton
getting a cross in from the right. With strike partner Douglas
Pringle coming in at the far post the Stags Tom Clarkson was
confident enough to allow the ball to go over his head, wrong
footing Pringle as the ball went out of play, and then Pringle
almost opened his account for Curzon when he got his head to a
Chris Worsley cross, only to see it drift wide of goal.
It was almost an unlucky 13 minutes for Curzon when a ball into
the box from a free kick was poorly defended and it was left to
David Birch to knock a goal bound effort from Clarkson off the
line and to safety.
It wasn't long before Curzon were once again attacking the home
goal with Norton turning his marker before getting a shot in on
goal which Lee Bracey had to get down quickly to his right to
collect.
The home side should have taken the lead on 25 minutes when Mark
Redshaw created all sorts of problems for the visiting defence
when he turned one way and then the other before the ball found
its way to Foy, 18 yards from goal and with no defender in
sight. With a clear shot on goal he hopelessly blazed his shot
high and wide.
The deadlock was finally broken on 37 minutes as teenager
Richard Tait worked the ball down the right before slipping it
to Worsley. His driven cross low inside the 6 yard area struck
Clarkson, leaving his keeper Bracey beaten as the ball nestled
in the inside netting.
Four minutes from the interval and it was the Norton Pringle
combination that came close to doubling the Blues as the latter
picked up a knock down from Norton but dragged his shot wide of
the target.
The second half began in dramatic style as Rhodri Giggs scored
within 20 seconds of the re-start.
From the off Curzon attacked down the right through Norton and
his cross into the 18 yard area was met with a majestic leap by
Giggs as he got his head to the ball to leave Bracey no more
than an admirer as the ball went in off his right hand post.
Norton tried his luck from 30 yards out which had Bracey going
full length to save, having to take the ball at the second
attempt and on the hour mark it was a confident three man move
that ended with another shot from Pringle who found Bracey equal
to it as he dived at full stretch to turn the ball away for a
corner.
Curzon put themselves in trouble when an attack broke down too
easily and the Stags went straight down the other end. Redshaw,
who had created a number of problems for the visiting defence,
got a shot in but a solid block by Paul Riley diverted the
danger.
Worsley gave way to Ryan Gilligan on 73 minutes and within 60
seconds of his arrival the substitute brought Bracey once more
into action with a shot that forced yet another full length
save.
With two minutes of normal time left the Stags were given a
life-line after they attacked down the left. Like Curzon's
opening goal the ball was driven in low and hard and as he
stretched out his right foot to prevent the ball from going
across the area, Birch could do no more than turn the ball past
David Carnell and into his own goal.
It's cup action for Curzon Ashton at the weekend when they make
the trip to the Wirrall to play Cammell Laird in the preliminary
round of The FA Trophy and then 48 hours later they entertain
Woodley Sports, which will be the third meeting of the two teams
with the space of four weeks.
