As the dark, and colder
nights, are now with us, some people may start to think about
Christmas, but this Curzon side came bearing gifts that the
Sheffield outfit gratefully accepted, as for the second time
this season they disposed of the UniBond North League leaders
from a cup competition.
The warning bells should have been ringing in the opening minute
after Adam Jones was well beaten by on 45 seconds by Nathan
Benger, who got the ball to team mate Adam Brown. His shot
across keeper Daren Riddett struck the inside of his right hand
post and was hastily knocked for a corner and from the kick Matt
Telling out-jumped the home defence but put the ball over the
top.
After being pegged back inside their own half for much of the
opening period, Curzon finally ventured to the Steels goal, but
the shot from Ian Berry was well of target, but a minute later
it was the first gift of the night that broke the deadlock.
With the ball knocked back to Riddett, with time and space in
which to clear the ball, his attempted pass to Ben Richardson
went straight to the feet of Adam Brown, who had the easiest of
tasks to roll the ball into an empty net.
Nine minutes later and it was two when captain Ian Richards beat
Richard Tait before driving the ball home from the edge of the
18 yard area.
It could easily have been three two minutes later when the bal
from a corner kick wasn't dealt with and Riddett managed to
snatch the ball at the second attempt.
There was little to suggest that Curzon would be able to get
anything from the game and while they had more play towards the
latter end of the half, and for long periods in the second, it
all came undone in the space of two second half minutes, and
unfortunately it was the usually reliable teenager Richard Tait
who had a hand in both.
On 49 minutes he was caught in possession by substitute Jamie
Vardy who was left with a clear run at goal and coolly slotted
the ball past Riddett, and it was the same pairing again, this
time with the substitute using his strength to get past his
marker, leaving himself with a one-on-one with the Blues keeper.
Curzon scored a consolation goal on 64 minutes when Rhodri ran
to the near post to tap home a cross from the left from Ian
Berry.
There will be changes for the FA Trophy game with Ilkeston Town
on Saturday, that is inevitable, and their watching management
will know to expect a totally different performance.
