Curzon Reserves were cruelly knocked out of the CSC by a single goal
to an in-form Beechfield Utd side. But score lines don’t always tell
the full story and if it had not been for the woodwork & excellent
goalkeeping from the Utd goalkeeper then Curzon would have won this
game comfortable. But the game is about scoring goals and Curzon
lacked the killer instinct in front of the goal. Beechfield who
with the strength and height in their side always looked dangerous
at set pieces never really gave Curzon’s keeper Nathan Milnes a shot
to save throughout the game, but as the game moved into the last
fifteen minutes of the ninety both sides knew that a mistake could
decide the game and that was the case, unfortunately it was Curzon
who made that mistake.
For the first ten minutes both sides battled to take control and the
game was scrappy but on the 13th minute Adam Buckley got
into the box & skipped past his marker and despite being tugged back
he managed to get a great shot off but the Utd’s keeper dived full
stretched to his left and palmed the ball onto the crossbar and out
for a corner.
From then on Curzon dominated the half producing some great football
and considering that the team have only played one game in the past
six weeks it was an excellent attacking display. Johnny Sarcevic
was the next to be denied by the Utd’s keeper as he bravely came out
to throw himself at Sarcevic fierce shot and the chances continued
but still they could not find a way through. In the second half the
game was much even but chances from both sides were few and far
between but the best chance again fell to Captain Adam Buckley who
was picked out at the far post by a left footed cross by Jamie Byrne
but he saw his header bounce off the top of the crossbar. With the
game looking like it would go straight to penalties Jordan Gill,
back for his first game since the 24th of November 2007
under hit his back pass to Milnes and allowed the Utd’s forward to
nip in and slot past him.
This was a blow for Curzon who did not deserve it but for the final
15 minutes they battled to get back on level terms with Beechfield
hanging onto their lead with desperate defending. The last chance
came when Curzon were awarded a free kick on the halfway line, a
cross in by Ben Richardson was just nicked of Sarcevic head as he
jumped to head home. On the positive side the team got a game under
their belt in readiness of restarting their league program this
Saturday, away to Woodley FC and a much needed game for the players
returning from injury. Overall this was a good solid performance
from this young Curzon reserve side it was just a pity that not many
from Curzon were there to witness it.
