After winning in the cup last week it was back to
league action for Curzon Reserves, they faced a good young Witton
Albion side as they looked to get back to winning ways after drawing
two and losing one in their past three league games. But it wasn’t
to be, it was game of wasted chances and good goalkeeping which saw
Witton making sure of their few chances that they were offered &
Curzon squandering theirs.
Again Curzon were forced into making changes from the week before
making five in all and also asking players to play out of their
normal positions. However Curzon played some good football at times
and created the chances only to see keeper Craig Ellison do very
well especially when he threw himself in front of Jamie Byrne to at
the far post after Byrne latched onto the end of a Hazen Gardner
cross. Gardner also provided another great cross but this time to
the near post but desperate defending saw the ball hacked away.
Witton who normally like to play through midfield played a direct
style game mainly due to their forward line being big and skilful.
Dean Williams provided the height being well over 6ft and Tom Rutter
showing the skill but neither of them hurt the back four of Curzon
who had Ben Blease (central midfielder) providing cover as centre
back. Curzon who are still working with the young players and at
times see players make the wrong decisions during games and at the
moment this is costing the Curzon side. Curzon gave away a needless
free kick which resulting in the 1st goal a free kick
that could of and should have been avoided. But the other giant Tom
Spears came up from the back to head the free kick home with help of
a wicked deflection.
Curzon then suffered a big blow when they lost Ryan Burgess just
before half time to an ankle injury suffered through a foul. He was
replaced by new signing Carl Green who after being released by
Accrington Stanley has not played any football for the last three
months or more but was placed into the squad three week before
planned due to injuries suspensions etc. In the second half Curzon
were much the better side and played more of the football, they
could sense a goal coming, they thought Gardner had got it when he
latched onto a cross but his header went just wide. But after all
the effort they were dealt a blow when Witton got the second
resulting from a cross from the right which went right across the
box to left midfielder Lewis James who was allowed to much time and
space to drill an 18 yard across the box shot which gave keeper Karl
Dean.
Curzon heads dropped and it took some encouragement from the sides
to get the lads back playing and fighting and in the last ten
minutes with some composure in front of goal Curzon could have
easily grabbed a share of the points or took them all, Adam Buckley,
Byrne and Gardner all guilty of missed chances.
Next week they travel to local Manchester League Side AVRO FC for
the 1st Rd of the Manchester Challenge Trophy KO 2pm at
the Lancaster Club, junction with Broadway & Oldham Rd (A62).
