With
not playing for two weeks this was a much needed game for the
reserve, as they have a tough fortnight ahead with a local derby
against Stalybridge Celtic next Saturday followed by a trip to 3rd
placed Crosfields.
Facing an experienced but struggling side in Poynton FC Curzon took
a very young side but had the experienced Adam Jones to give them
some experience of their own at the back. The pitch was a very
sticky muddy mess which cut very badly and this was a leveller for
both sides over the next couple of months teams going there will
struggle. Poynton looking for their 1st point of the
season battled their hearts out and the reserves had to battle along
with them but throughout the 90 minutes Curzon showed the better
quality, but again and not for the 1st time this season
they failed to finish off some great approach work with a goal.
Nathan Finnigan back in the side had four good chances, shooting
from outside the box but he found keeper Paul Watterson in great
form who flung himself at everything that came his way producing
some fine goalkeeping. Johnny Sarcevic thought he had put Curzon in
front only to see his effort hit the post, which was to happen twice
more in the game. But on 7 minutes Sarcevic got a second chance and
this time cleverly lobbed the advancing Watterson.
But within a minute poor marking allowed a shot to come in from
Poynton which keeper Keith Jones could only manage to palm away but
only into the path of the striker who slotted home. In the second
half Curzon started off the brightest and went looking for their
second goal but they had to wait till the 70th minute to
get it, from a corner the ball played deep found Adam Jones who
brought the ball down and shot home. As in the 1st half
Curzon again failed to keep hold of the lead for more than five
minutes, this time losing the ball cheaply in midfield, Poynton
managed to beat the offside and the striker had just the keeper to
beat broke into the box but Adam Jones got back but only managed to
bring him down to give the referee no choice but to award a
penalty.
Andy Oaks stepped up to convert. This goal gave Poynton the belief
that they were about to get their 1st point of the season
and they defended deeply. Curzon who have this ‘never say die
attitude’ attacked and attacked Poynton, they threw everything at
them and had three good shouts for a penalty after both forwards in
Sarcevic & Jamie Byrne were brought down and a blatant clearance
using a arm went unpunished. On the 87th minute and their
4th shouts for a penalty they finally got it after Adam
Jones was brought down inside the six yard box, Johnny Sarcevic
stepped up to score his second of the game and his 8th in
only six appearances. It was hard fought for but a well deserved
victory for the young Curzon side and now they look forward to the
local derby next Saturday and hopefully and very good Christmas.
