Curzon Ashton Res bagged another three points to add
to their total but produced a below par performance against bottom
side Poynton. Curzon changed the side completely from their last
outing and it included four new faces which is always difficult for
the new players and the team to gel when thrown together for the
first time. Curzon never looked in any danger of losing this game
but missed a host of chances in the second half which would have
boosted their goal difference.
The first goal came on the half an hour mark and 1st team
regular Eddie Stanford finished off a good move for his first goal
for the reserves and his second for the club. With the ball being
played in Johnny Sarcevic he held it well till Stanford went passed
him, Sarcevic then flicked the ball into his path and Stanford
slotted the ball under the keeper at his near post. The second came
soon after, this time Curzon were awarded a free kick to the left of
the ‘D’ around 20 yards out, Vassos Theophanous making his debut
stepped up to make a impression, his kick was low and past the wall
straight into the keeper but keeper Paul Williams fumbled the ball
and with Curzon’s forwards following in on the free kick it was
Taras Vorobel who was also making his debut to be first there to
pounce on the loose ball to slot home.
Johnny Sarcevic who was having an excellent game deservedly got onto
the score sheet just before half time when he was played into the
box, he carried the ball to the by-line and then turned his
defender, just as everyone thought he was going to cross he saw the
opening and slotted past Williams from a tight angle to the far
post. With the game won Curzon came out in the second half and
didn’t punish Poynton, they defended well and attacked well on the
break but when their chances came they didn’t take them, Curzon then
made all three changes and will have to look after some of their
players as now the games are coming thick and fast there were some
tired legs on show. But Curzon are glad of the three points which
will hopefully secure them a top five finish and more pleasing that
they have now kept three clean sheets in a row.
