Curzon suffered their biggest defeat of the season to
the current league holders Middlewich although they did not have any
complaints it was not a 4-1 game, but it has severely dented their
chances of winning the division at their 1st attempt.
Curzon started the game with great tempo and pressed Middlewich back
into their own half and it wasn’t a surprise when took the lead, Ben
Blease attacking a corner and with a deft flick sailed it past
keeper Matt Conkie. Curzon sensing that they could get something
from this game pressed forward at every opportunity and created a
few good chances, the best falling to Aiden Derwent whose powerful
shot had to be well saved by Conkie to keep the score at 1-0.
Middlewich then had a bit of luck when a shot inside the box hit
centre-back Jordan Gill on his hand, the shot was around 5 yards
from Gill and came at some speed, he held his hands up to protect
his face, the ball hitting his head 1st before hitting
his hand. Keeper Keith Jones was so unlucky not to save the penalty
with the ball hitting his legs and just rolling over the line. Then
five minutes later Danny Toft who has had a fantastic season, made
an uncharacteristic mistake to allow Stu Tulloch to burst through
and round Jones to make it 2-1 up to half time.
In the second half Curzon never really got going, they played into
the wind and at times struggled to clear the lines with any
conviction, Middlewich who play the direct football put Curzon under
pressure with every ball knocked forward. Curzon through their own
fault gifted Middlewich two goals, both times giving the ball away
in their own defensive third, the fourth goal for Middlewich the
best of the game when again, Tulloch finished from a very tight
angle. Curzon did not give up and at times produced some good
attacking play, but lacked the killer ball and although Middlewich
had to compete to the end they never looked like losing the game.
Curzon players were very disappointed with their performance and
know that the chance to either win or come runners up and has now
gone, but they are determined to finish this great season that they
are having on a high and hope not to lose another game this season.
They now face Rylands FC at home this Saturday with KO at 3pm.
