This
was a great result for Curzon Ashton Reserves, with the injury list
the 1st team have and their own injury list both squads
had to reshuffle leaving the reserves to recruit four players for
this game including the clubs own community officer Mark Bradshaw
who at 38 was the oldest player on the field of play. With five
players making their debuts, this was always going to be a tough
fixture against a inform Crosfields side who like Curzon were the
only other side in the 1st division still unbeaten.
Crosfields who were the much older & experienced side played their
part in this game choosing to play rather than out-muscle the young
Curzon side but for all their strengths it was Curzon who had the
majority of the game. Crosfields opted to play in a 3-5-2 formation
and caused Curzon at times to struggle with their extra man in
midfield but still restricted them to only a couple of half chances.
Curzon took the lead in the 28th minute when a great
cross-field ball by Sammy Hinchcliffe turned Crosfileds back three
and found Adam Buckley who finished with calmness leaving keeper Ian
Warburton flat footed. In the second half Curzon reorganised
bringing on the experienced Mark Bradshaw for new boy Brian
Mottershead who after a few months away in America was struggling
with the pace of the game.
They also sorted the problem of Crosfields extra man in midfield
which allowed their full backs to be better outlets for the team and
this improved the whole shape & pattern of play. On 65 minutes it
was right fullback Dave Green who after pushing right up to
Crosfields 18 yard box delivered a low cross into Nathan Finnigan
who’s first time shot looped up and over the stranded Warburton.
This was the goal that Curzon needed and deserved but on the 80th
minute Daniel Toft brought down his marker inside the box and Lee
Boardman smashed his penalty home giving Keeper Karl Dean no chance.
Crosfields then introduced Steve Saunders (Ex Preston) and they had
their best spell of the game with Saunders being a big influence but
Curzon defended very well twice heading off the line through
Bradshaw & Hinchcliffe. In the final kick off the game Jerone
Steele on as sub & making his first appearance for the club made it
three one after twisting & turning inside the box to finally shoot
past Warburton.
Curzon are next back in action next Saturday the 1st
September, home again to Pilkington KO at 3pm.
