Management team Dave Jones & Pete Leach although
disappointed with this result still saw a lot of good positive
things from this game. Many will just see the score-line and make
their own impressions but three individual errors cost the young
Curzon side this game and that is the area where the management team
hope to address.
Physically this young Curzon side do get out strengthen in games but
they will learn, get stronger and will become harder to beat and
that will take time. Curzon Reserves have that time because they
don’t have to win this league, they have to improve as individuals
and as a team to progress and get into the clubs 1st
team. Football wise Curzon out played Styal FC and did not deserve
to lose this game but in the final third their ball & decision
making deserted them and Styal at times rode their luck. Styal took
the lead early in the 1st half from a corner, a corner
that should not have been awarded, following a back pass from Nathan
Finnigan, keeper Steve Szklanka completely missed kicked and lucky
for him rolled over the line for a corner. Curzon defended the first
ball in but the loose ball was pounce on by Dave Graham to head
home. The goal was a blow for Curzon as they were right from the
start in control of the game and playing some great possession
football. Curzon did have some chances a free kick from Jordan
Leach was headed off the line, Adam Buckley lobbed the keeper but it
didn’t have the pace to go in and the keeper Andrew Carlex recovered
to collect then Stuart Ball after some great one touch football from
Curzon could not get his shot in when he got into the box only to be
surrounded by three defenders.
In the second half Curzon always felt that they could get back into
this game and continued to play the football which at times had
Styal ragged & chasing shadows but Curzon just could not find a way
through. Again when Curzon were on top Styal scored again, this
time Ben Richardson who carried the ball into their half gave away
the ball with a sloppy pass, with most players for Curzon committed
forward, a great ball from Brian Matthews found Oliver Barnes who
broke into the box and slotted past Szklanka. This was a big blow
for Curzon but they continued to battle and play the football, Ben
Richardson made amends when again he carried the ball forward but
this time delivered a far post cross for top scorer Adam Buckley to
head a very difficult ball across goal to the far post. This goal
lifted Curzon and they attacked at every opportunity & brought on
Dane Buller to booster the attack. Styal were now restricted to the
counter attack & their tactic of the long ball one of which found
Graham who when ran into the box was clumsy brought down by Szklanka
which earned him a yellow card and Styal a penalty. The impressive
Matthews put the penalty away and any chances of a Curzon come back.
Curzon were disappointed as they came off the park and will now have
to travel to Styal next week to meet them in the cup but hopefully
they will have their regular centre halves backs and try to make
amends for this defeat.
