The Nash Face Yellows for the First Time Since 2014

Tomorrow, the Nash go back on the road to face former Northern Premier rivals Warrington Town at Cantilever Park.

The Nash go into part 2 of the bank holiday double-header unbeaten in five with eyes set on revenge against a side they failed to beat on their last encounter, will the run continue?
On Saturday, the Nash upset the odds at home to ex-Championship side and title-favourites, Scunthorpe United despite not commanding the possession as we’ve so often seen.

The game marked another appearance landmark as ex-County defender, Marcus Poscha made it one hundred for the club with manager Adam Lakeland commenting on achievement ‘you can’t have a revolving door of players if you want to have a competitive team.’ As has so often been the case in the last few games, the match-up started slow and without many nailed-on chances for either side, with both teams looking to get a feel for each other before extending forward.

Although this wouldn’t last for long as Miles Storey drove down the wing and placed an inch perfect cross into the box, just away from the Iron defender, into the path of captain Craig Mahon, who made no mistake when getting his scoring account off and running for the season, 1-0. However, the possession didn’t shift after this goal as the Iron continued to be on-top with them fashioning the next major chance when ex-EFL midfielder Jacob Butterfield struck a long-range effort just wide of the Nash goal, Cam Mason seeming rooted to the spot.

As the game went on, the Nash seemed content with sitting in and playing on the break whenever an opportunity arises, but this didn’t come without near damaging consequences as the Iron mounted more pressure which led to more chances. Danny Whitehall going close as the half drew to close, forcing Cam Mason into a great one-handed save to deny the ex-Spitfires forward.

The visitors kept up this aggression into the second half with two quickfire chances, one going marginally wide from Danny Elliot and the other from Kian Scales forcing a good diving catch from the Nash shot stopper. Despite the torrential downpour which befell the Tameside, the Iron weren’t looking to slow down as was shown from a dangerous chance late-on with Danny Elliot powering a header off the crossbar, leaving Mason helpless as his woodwork came to the rescue. The Iron were left to rue these missed chances as they fell to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of still unbeaten Curzon Ashton.

This made it five games unbeaten from the start of the season, beating the previous club record of four in 2019/2020. It also meant the Nash were 1 of 6 sides in the National League to remain unbeaten, keeping company with the likes of Altrincham, Brackley Town, Chelmsford City, Farsley Celtic and Solihull Moors. Lakeland commented on this run ‘we’ll take confidence from being unbeaten still.’

The Yellows didn’t have the same explosive weekend as the Nash with them crumbling to a 2-0 loss in Lincolnshire at the hands of Boston United. In fact, Warrington matched their second day defeat to then leaders Blyth Spartans AFC, another 2-0 loss but this time on the road. In the lead up to the game, the Yellows managed to beat local opposition Buxton and Chorley with both matches ending in 1-0 scorelines.

The Pilgrims took the lead with under ten minutes of regular play to go in the first half through ex-Brakes midfielder Kelsey Mooney, who notched seven goals at his previous Warwickshire club. The game was put out of sight midway through the second half as summer signing Keziah Martin got his first in yellow and black to push the Pilgrims up to fourth in the table.
